What does Founded, but no Consequences mean? Shouldn't there be consequences for bullying behavior?
Founded, but no consequences may mean a discussion with the student took place that didn't reach the level of detention, suspension, or even expulsion. Many bullying incidents can be resolved through a discussion in the principal's office and that's what Founded, but no consequences typically falls under.
How come the bullying numbers are all over the place? Some schools report 0 while others report over 300 in a single year!
Every school is very different when it comes to their reporting. Since the 2007-08 school year when reporting was mandated by Iowa law, schools have improved greatly in their reporting. We are seeing improvement in school administrators ensuring bullying is reported, but we still need to continue to educate about the need to report their bullying data.
Why are only three of the seventeen protected categories under the law listed?
The Iowa Department of Education took out what was going to be believed to be the top three issues of bullying in the state when the reporting initially occurred. Iowa Safe Schools does agree that the Other category needs to be weeded out because there are many cases of bullying related to a student's ability or disabily, religion, familial status, and gender identity.
Where did these numbers come from?
The data is pulled from the Iowa Department of Education's website (www.educateiowa.gov). In order to simplify the numbers, make sure people have better access to the data, and provide information in a readable format - Iowa Safe Schools provides the data in the format listed.
