What is the date for the 8th Annual Iowa Governors Conference on LGBTQ Youth?
Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Is there more information coming soon?
Yes! Additional information on registrations, workshops, exhibitors, and all the details are coming soon

Yes! I have never been to Drake University.  Is there a map?
Yes.  Check out Drake University's page for their campus map and directions:  http://www.drake.edu/about/directions.php

Where do I park when I get to Drake?
Drake University has a lot in front of the Olmsted Center.  This parking lot is a pay lot and you can pay with cash or a credit card upon leaving.  The cost to park is not very high per vehicle.  If you do not want to use the pay lot, Drake University has other parking throughout campus that is designated for Visitors of the campus or there is street parking.  Please follow all signs of parking lots and on the street.

Can I bring a sign or items to show my support of the LGBTQ movement?
Yes! We ask that anything you bring with does not contain latex as Drake University is a latex free campus.  This is due to severe allergies individuals can have.

Can I bring a student group like a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) or diversity club with me to the Conference?
Yes! Over half of the attendees are students who just care about making a difference in their communities.

Is this Conference just for students?
No.  Half the attendees are students and the other half are adults.  It's important that when discussing youth issues we have the youth themselves in the room and being a part of that discussion.  Some workshop sessions are specific for youth-only audiences while others are geared towards professional audiences.

Are there any volunteer opportunities with the Conference?
Yes! Please email Nate at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to find out about volunteering that day.

Why a Conference about LGBTQ youth?
LGBTQ youth are statistically more likely to be bullied, consider suicide, have substance abuse issues, higher rates of homelessness, and adults are less likely to be considered supportive by LGBTQ youth.  The high need facing this specific population and those youth who are allies is why there is a need for this Conference.

Who founded the Conference?
Iowa Safe Schools founded the event in 2006 and has continued to host, organize, publicize, and work towards it annually.  Many organizations have supported the event since its inception including the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Association of School Boards, School Administrators of Iowa, Iowa State Education Association, and Iowa Civil Rights Commission in addition to various corporate partnerships over the years.
