Republican Legislators Play Politics with Student Safety
H.F. 2291 Introduced by Reps. Schultz & Windschitl Would Eliminate Protections for Iowa’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Students

Des Moines, IA –State Representatives Jason Schultz, R-Schleswig and Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, introduced H.F. 2291 which would eliminate protections for LGBT students under the Iowa Safe Schools Law.   The 2007 law protects all Iowa students based on 17 classes from harassment and bullying in schools.  H.F. 2291 would strike ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’ from the protected classes.    “Legislators should be working on balancing the state budget and helping Iowa families - not allowing bullies to attack Iowa’s youth,” said Nate Monson, Executive Director of Iowa Safe Schools.  “Reps. Schultz & Windschitl should be ashamed for playing politics with the safety of Iowa’s students.”   H.F 2291 was introduced on February 4 and was referred to the House Education Committee.  The first funnel deadline is February 12 making the chances of the bill’s success unlikely.    Iowa Safe Schools will continue to monitor the bill and contact lawmakers as needed.  The full text of H.F. 2291 can be found HERE.   About Iowa Safe Schools: Iowa Safe Schools works to improve school climate in order to increase the personal safety, mental health, and student learning of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied (LGBTA) and all other students and to increase awareness and understanding among current and future educators, school administrators, and key community agents of inequities regarding the safety of LGBTA students in schools and communities throughout Iowa.  For more information contact Nate Monson at 515-243-1221 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
