The 2016 GSA of the Year Award will be given to Humboldt High School GSA at the Spirit Awards on October 20th in Des Moines.  Humboldt High School GSA has proven that LGBTQ student organizations can thrive in a rural community.  Founded in 2012, this GSA has been a fierce advocate for students who may not have a place to belong.  The GSA has been involved in a number of activities including the Governor's Conference on LGBTQ Youth.  While the students involved have faced incidents of bullying, their advisors and others involved in the GSA continue to get back up and stand for LGBTQ rights.

One of the most impressive aspects is the number of students the GSA continues to have involved year after year even though Humboldt is a rural community.  The students continue to lead an organization that thrives in the face of adversity and provides a safe space that any student can belong. Humboldt High School GSA serves as both a support group for LGBTQ youth and an advocacy group to improve acceptance and understanding of individuals who are LGBTQ.
