Hannah Mitchell (she/they) is the Director of Youth Engagement at Iowa Safe Schools, where she leads The GSA Network program, supports victims of bullying, speaks at student workshops, and coordinates volunteers for student events. Hannah also launched the Iowa Safe Schools Summer Student Intern Program and has expanded educational resources for both students and teachers.
A graduate of the University of Iowa, Hannah earned degrees in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Social Justice, and Social Work. While at Iowa, she worked as a Certified Peer Educator at the Women’s Resource and Action Center and completed a thesis paper on the challenges queer student organizations face.
Hannah’s passion for LGBTQ student advocacy started in high school when she first connected with Iowa Safe Schools as a GSA student leader. She later led the University of Iowa’s LGBTQ+ sorority, Gamma Rho Lambda. The experiences and challenges she faced as a student continue to guide her work today. Hannah is still close friends with many of the folks from her high school GSA club and is an active alum member of Gamma Rho Lambda.
When she’s not working, Hannah spends her time babying her cat son (Francis), getting overly invested in niche craft projects, or playing Animal Crossing.
