We conduct this annual survey to better understand what school is like for LGBTQ+ and allied students across Iowa. We need your voice!
That’s why we launched our Student Experiences Survey last school year. Iowa Safe Schools is a non-governmental & non-profit organization based in Des Moines. Our goal is to gather valuable insights into the experiences of LGBTQ and allied K-12 students across Iowa.
We appreciate your time and honesty in completing this survey. Your input is crucial in helping us create a safer and more inclusive environment for all students in Iowa.

The Student Experience Survey is an annual project from Iowa Safe Schools to understand what LGBTQ+ and allied students are experiencing in schools across Iowa.
Students share their voices so we can document, shape programs, and communicate their perspectives to educators, parents, lawmakers, and community leaders.
Recent years have brought major changes in Iowa schools, from anti-LGBTQ+ legislation to shifting policies about curriculum and inclusion—all while less data is being collected and shared. This survey helps fill that gap by recording the real impact on students’ safety, well-being, and decisions about their futures.
We asked students about experiences they’ve had in the past two years that are often linked to recent state laws—things like hiding who they are, losing access to resources, or being silenced in school. Even without knowing the details of legislation, many students reported these impacts.
1 in 4 have been told they cannot discuss LGBTQ+ topics in class.
1 in 3 conceal their identity and avoid seeking help from school staff due to fear of being outed.
5 in 6 lost access to literature that includes positive representations of LGBTQ people.
40% reported avoiding using the restroom at school due to lack of appropriate facility.
45% reported being denied use of their name and pronoun(s) at school.
