Iowa Safe Schools is hiring a paid Summer 2026 intern! This opportunity is designed for high school and college students (must be 16 or older) interested in advocacy, communications, nonprofit work, design, education, and social change.
Real experience in nonprofit and advocacy work — not busywork, but projects that actually get used.
Hands-on projects you could put in a portfolio (written content, visual resources, or program support).
Regular collaboration and mentorship with staff to support your growth and talk through your work.

Position Description:
Iowa Safe Schools is seeking a motivated student to join our team this summer. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in nonprofit work, advocacy, and program development, while supporting meaningful projects that impact LGBTQ+ and allied students across Iowa.
The selected intern will contribute to the creation and updating of student-facing resources and help turn complex information into engaging formats for youth. This role also includes supporting our youth programming and engagement efforts, with opportunities to contribute to event planning, programming development, and outreach.
Working closely with staff, the intern will select and complete several potential projects that strengthen the organization’s student programming. The role is collaborative, with some flexibility, allowing the intern to align project work with their interests and professional goals while building experience in communication, project management, and program support.
We are hiring one intern for this position. This role can be completed in one of the following formats:

Optional in-person opportunities: Regardless of format, the intern may have opportunities to join staff for events, meetings, or shadowing experiences. Participation is optional and intended to enhance the overall internship experience.
$15/hour, distributed in three stipend payments throughout the internship, including an initial payment at the start of the program.

Creating a small business resource guide by gathering and translating advice from supportive local businesses into student-friendly tips.
Concepting, designing, or artist sourcing. Coordinate production and launch campaign.
Assisting with conference planning, designing workshops or activities, supporting GSA-in-a-Day, and informing event decisions.
Creating and scheduling social media posts, supporting email campaigns, translating the GSA Guidebook into short form content, and building a year-long content calendar with monthly themes.
Converting student-facing resources into zines or visual formats for print and social media using Canva.
Supporting summer mailer preparation, summer pride event presence, and contributing to office beautification projects.
