Join us for Student Day at the Capitol! Whether it’s your first time in the Capitol or you’ve been there countless times, we’re excited for you to learn more about the legislative process, craft your own personal message, and speak to your lawmakers about what matters to YOU!
Registration closes February 23rd, 2026 at 5 PM.
March 3rd, 2026
Check-in: 8:30 AM
Event Start: 9:00 AM
End of Day: ~2:30 PM (Our staff will be at the capitol until 2:30pm, attendees are welcome to schedule tours after our event concludes)
Our day will start at the Iowa State Historical Building
600 E Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50319
We will travel to the State Capitol Building as a walking group - (0.3 miles, approx 7 min walk, slight incline).
Designed for a high school and college student audience. Middle school students interested in advocacy are encouraged to attend with a parent, guardian, or trusted adult.

Start the day with a crash course in how the legislative process works, advocacy best practices, and an overview of key laws we’re watching this session. You’ll leave ready to speak confidently about the issues that matter most to you.

Then, we’ll head to the Iowa State Capitol together. You’ll have the opportunity to meet with your representatives, share your perspective, and see advocacy in action.

Light breakfast items will be available at check in, please do not bring these into the auditorium.
Lunch: Attendees should bring a bagged lunch or money for the Capitol cafeteria. If this is a concern for you or a student, please reach out—we're happy to help!

Additions Closed: Additional names cannot be added after Monday, February 23, 2026 at 5:00 PM Central Time.

Please reach us at hannah@iowasafeschools.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Nope! You won't be expected to talk with a lawmaker on your own unless you feel ready to do so. Our goal is to make civic engagement approachable and to support you in building confidence. Many students tell us that they initially felt really nervous but found themselves ready and excited to speak up once we're up at the Capitol.
We invite you to participate in whatever way feels comfortable:
Ultimately, we only expect anyone joining our group to maintain high standards of conduct, interacting respectfully with Capitol staff. Whether you're here to observe, support, or advocate, we're here to help make the experience valuable for you.
That's okay! The State Capitol building can get pretty loud and busy during the legislative session. If you need a moment to step away, feel free to access:
If you are attending with a group, please be sure to communicate your whereabouts.
Our official event programming will largely be on the third floor of the Capitol building, and will not include a building tour. That being said, attendees are welcome to arrange their own tours. More information can be found on the Iowa State Capitol website.
We want you to feel your most confident and professional -- but seriously, no need to stress or purchase anything new. We typically encourage business casual (so think slacks/skirts or dark wash jeans, blouses/polos, button-downs, cardigans, blazers or other comfortable, professional clothing.) Come as your best self in clothing that makes you feel empowered!
NOTE: This event takes place in Iowa in early March and includes a short walk between venues. Please take note of the weather the day of the event and dress accordingly. There are coat racks in the Capitol for coats or winter gears.
Bring a your enthusiasm, questions, and ideas! You might also bring a pen and notebook to jot your thoughts down.
Please note that all members of the public will pass through a security scan upon entering the state Capitol building. This includes a metal detector and bag check.
